Lukwago Taken to Kira Division After Days in Military Detention, Faces Treason Charges

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and senior lawyer Erias Lukwago has been moved to Kira Division police facilities, three days after he was allegedly detained by military operatives at his home in Wakaliga, Kampala.

People familiar with the situation say Lukwago has been in military custody since Monday and is expected to face charges related to treason and misprision of treason. Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the allegations.

His transfer comes at a time of heightened political tension linked to ongoing proceedings involving opposition politician Kizza Besigye, whom Lukwago has been representing in court.

According to accounts from his family and associates, armed personnel reportedly stormed Lukwago’s residence early on Monday before taking him to an undisclosed location. His whereabouts were unclear for several days, prompting concern among relatives, colleagues and political allies.

He was later reportedly taken to Kira Road Police Station on Thursday morning ahead of possible formal proceedings.

Sources suggest the alleged charges are similar to those faced by Besigye, whose legal team includes Lukwago, and who has been challenging aspects of the state’s case in court.

Lukwago was reportedly detained at a time when he was preparing to pursue a court order seeking to compel Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba to appear in proceedings linked to allegations of abduction and torture raised in a separate case.

By the time of publication, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces had issued an official statement explaining the arrest, detention, or the legal grounds for the reported charges.

The case is expected to draw close scrutiny given Lukwago’s prominence as a senior lawyer and political figure, and his role in several high-profile opposition-related cases.

The matter remains under development.
