Security Maintains Tight Control Over Access to Former Speaker’s Residence

Security personnel continue to maintain a permanent presence at the residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, with all visitors subject to strict screening before being allowed entry.

An observation by this publication found that, contrary to claims circulating on social media, Among is not being held in complete isolation. A limited number of visitors are still being granted access to the residence after receiving clearance from either security officials or individuals inside the compound.

The residence on Mackinnon Road in Nakasero remains heavily guarded by personnel from various security agencies, including the Special Forces Command (SFC), Counter-Terrorism Police and plain-clothed operatives. All visitors are subjected to security checks before entry is authorised.

When this reporter sought access to the residence, security officers said only individuals whose names had been approved in advance by Among or those already inside the compound could be admitted. Entry was denied after the reporter failed to present prior authorisation, and security personnel advised seeking clearance before returning.

The observations suggest that access to the residence is being closely regulated rather than completely blocked.

During the visit, a vehicle was allowed into the compound without delay. Shortly afterwards, Bukedea Woman MP Lucy Akello and another visitor were admitted after undergoing routine security checks. The visitors were carrying what appeared to be gifts and indicated they had been invited by the former Speaker.

The findings support recent remarks by Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere, who said he had attended a prayer gathering at Among’s residence together with a Catholic priest and other leaders.

According to Okwere, family members and selected visitors have continued to access the residence despite the heightened security measures.

The restrictions have fuelled public speculation regarding Among’s health and circumstances following political developments that unfolded after the 2026 general election.

Former Kampala Central MP Mohammed Nsereko has alleged that Among is experiencing health complications and has limited access to specialised medical treatment. He claimed that she was suffering from swollen legs caused by a blood clot, although he did not provide medical evidence to support the allegation.

Acting Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) National Coordinator Alice Alaso has also stated that the former Speaker has faced health challenges but declined to provide further details.

Authorities have not publicly explained the continued deployment of security personnel at Among’s residence following operations in which several vehicles linked to her were impounded and transported to Naguru Police Headquarters.

Among, who served as Speaker of Parliament from 2022 until the end of the 11th Parliament and remains the ruling National Resistance Movement’s second national vice chairperson (female), has largely stayed out of the public eye since security agencies took action against her shortly after President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony.

Her limited public appearances have left questions about her health, political future and freedom of movement unanswered.
