Court Martial Convicts Two Intelligence Informers Over Munyonyo, Kalerwe Bomb Attacks

KAMPALA — The General Court Martial sitting at Makindye has convicted two former state informers Hamza Lyavala and Adiil Walusansa over their role in bomb attacks that killed two women in Munyonyo and Kalerwe in June 2025.

The court heard that the two men who were working as informers supplied security agencies with false intelligence about the attacks while concealing their own involvement in the operations.

Prosecution evidence indicated that Lyavala and Walusansa were not merely providing information to security agencies but participated in the mission that resulted in the bombings.

They were accused of helping to procure and transport the explosives used in the attacks and subsequently providing misleading information to security personnel in an apparent attempt to divert attention from their involvement.

One of the explosions occurred in Munyonyo during activities surrounding Martyrs Day killing a woman.
Another blast later occurred in Kalerwe where a second woman was killed.

The prosecution relied on evidence linking the two former informers to the preparation and execution of the attacks arguing that their position as security informers enabled them to provide information that could obscure their alleged activities.

After considering the evidence, the General Court Martial found Lyavala and Walusansa guilty of the offences arising from the bomb attacks.

However, Lt. Col. Ephraim Byaruhanga who is jointly charged in the case has maintained his innocence.

Byaruhanga has denied involvement in the bomb attacks and continues to contest the allegations against him.

The convictions mark a significant development in the prosecution of those accused of involvement in the June 2025 bomb attacks, which left two people dead and heightened security concerns in Kampala.

The court is expected to deal with the next stage of proceedings including sentencing of the two convicted men while the case against the remaining accused proceeds.
