Five people have died and six others sustained injuries after a truck rammed into a stationary passenger taxi along the Masaka–Kyotera highway, police have said.

The crash happened at about 11:00 local time on Wednesday at Botero Trading Centre and involved a Hino truck, registration number T813DYP/T251ZH, and a taxi, commonly known as a drone, registration number UBH 378W.

According to Southern Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, the taxi had stopped by the roadside to drop off passengers when it was hit from behind by the truck, which was travelling in the same direction.

Mr Kasirye said three women and two men died in the collision. Two of the victims were identified as 28-year-old Vega Marks and a 60-year-old woman identified only as Janati.

The bodies were taken to Kalisizo General Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Six other people, including five men and one woman, were injured and rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Some were admitted to Kalisizo General Hospital, while others were transferred to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

Police have since arrested the truck driver to assist with investigations, and both vehicles have been impounded for inspection.

“The cause of the accident is still under inquiry, though it is alleged that the driver of the truck was overspeeding and driving recklessly,” Mr Kasirye said.

The latest crash adds to concerns over road safety on Uganda’s highways, where speeding and dangerous driving continue to contribute to fatal accidents.

Police urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and exercise caution while using the roads, warning that reckless driving remains a major cause of preventable deaths.
