Police in Rubanda District are searching for a 28-year-old man accused of killing his elder brother following a domestic altercation in western Uganda.

The suspect, identified as Theophil Turyamureba, is alleged to have attacked and killed his brother, 31-year-old Chrispus Bainomugisha, in Isingiro Cell, Igomanda Parish, Hamurwa Sub-county.

According to police, the incident happened after the deceased reportedly returned home late and in an intoxicated state, where he is said to have caused tension within the household.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the situation escalated into violence.

“This prompted his brother, Theophil Turyamureba, to pick a stick and hit the deceased on the head several times, leading to his death,” SP Tumushime said.

Following the incident, Turyamureba fled the scene and remains at large as police continue efforts to trace him.

Authorities say a manhunt has been launched, with security agencies appealing to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to his arrest.

Police have also raised concern over rising domestic violence cases linked to alcohol and substance abuse in the region.

SP Tumushime urged young people to avoid excessive drinking, saying it continues to contribute to preventable violence within families.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing.
