In a bid to support income generation and poverty alleviation among ex-combatants, the Government of Uganda has donated a modern brick-making machine to former Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) members in the Rwenzori sub-region.
The official handover ceremony took place this afternoon at Verina Gardens in Kasese Municipality, where Lt. Joe Walunsimbi, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner, lauded the initiative as a step toward economic reintegration. He commended the government for providing the South African-manufactured machine and urged the beneficiaries to use it productively to improve their livelihoods.
Hon. Karim Baluku Kisembo, the Kasese District Secretary for Works and Technical Services, announced that the district had allocated five acres of land in Rukoki to serve as the project’s operational base. He encouraged the beneficiaries to appreciate the government’s support and remain united in safeguarding the project’s sustainability.
Meanwhile, Hon. Henry Basaliza Araali, the Demobilization and Rehabilitation Team Leader for the Amnesty Commission in Kasese, highlighted the machine’s impressive capacity to produce up to 5,000 bricks per day. However, he cautioned the project administrators against tribalism, favoritism, and any form of extortion, emphasizing that the initiative should benefit all returnees fairly.
The donation reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate former insurgents, promoting peace and economic empowerment in the region.
